미국의 추수감사절 Thanksgiving이 다가올 무렵, 뉴욕의 한 신문에서 엘리스 헤니컨 칼럼니스트가 쓴 “추수감사절에 감사해야 할 일들”이라는 제목의 기사를 보게 됐습니다. 이 글은 미국에서 논란이 있었던 일들을 마치 감사해야할듯이 빈정대는 풍자기사였어요.

저는 꽤 흥미로워보여서 읽기 시작했지만, 읽은지 얼마 안되서 기분이 확 나빠졌습니다. 글 중엔, “이번 휴양지를 남한에 있는 “lovely”,즉 “아름다운” 연평도로 안 정한 것에 대해서 감사하자” 라는 내용이 있더라구요.

한국어로 번역하면 그닥 기분이 안 나쁘게 들릴수도 있지만, 영어로 읽었을땐 연평도의 비극을 마치 연예인 스캔들처럼 가볍게 말하더군요. 그리고 연평도를 또 휴양지로 비교하다니.. 전 순간 연평도에서 일어난 사건을 너무 쉽게 말하는것 같아 기분이 굉장히 안 좋아졌습니다.

북한이 많은 이슈를 일으키기도 하지만, 연평도 사건은 아무런 죄없는 사람들이 목숨을 잃었기때문에 그렇게 가볍게 말하는건 예의가 아니라 생각했었거든요.

그리고 이 글을 읽으면서 웃고 넘길 사람들을 생각하니, 너무 마음이 안 좋아서 한참을 씩씩거리고 있다가, 기사를 작성한 분의 이메일주소로 메일을 쓰기 시작했죠.

메일 내용을 간단히 소개합니다.

“저는 뉴욕의 10학년 학생입니다. 당신이 추수감사절 주제로 쓴 글은 잘 읽었습니다. 하지만 글중에 짚고 넘어가야될 부분이 있어서 이렇게 메일을 씁니다. 물론 의도적으로 하지는 않았겠지만, 미국 연예인 스캔들을 바탕으로 한 글에다가 연평도를 넣은것은 당신의 생각이 짧았다고 느낍니다. 북한의 공격때문에 연평도에선 소중한 목숨들을 잃었고, 지금 한국은 너무나 큰 슬픔과 분노에 잠겨 있습니다. 그러니 그렇게 가볍게 말한 것에 대해선 반성하길 바랍니다.”

그 기자가 내 메일을 읽고 조금이나마 뉘우치길 바랐기 때문에, 신중하게 써서 보냈죠. 혹시하고 기대를 했지만 예상대로 답장은 오지 않았어요. 답장은 안 바래도, 글쓴이가 제 의견을 듣고 반성하면 좋겠다는 마음으로 보냈으니 꼭 읽었으면 좋겠어요.

Ignorance can really go far

Before the week of Thanksgiving, an article was publishedon one of the newspapers in New York. I began to read through the newspaper, and landed upon an article that was titled, ““Things to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Holiday”” by Ellis Henican.

The title caught my eyes right away and I began to read it. However, I was not pleased when I was done reading. The article was basically belittling all the scandals that happened in American politics and other celebrity scandals, which people should be supposedly “thankful”, but the author was obviously being sarcastic about it.

What I couldn’t understand was why the author included the tragic happening at Yeonpyeoungdo, South Korea, fromthe attacks of North Korea in the article. The author stated, “People should be thankful for not planning their holiday getaway to ‘lovely’ Yeonpyeongdo.”

This struck me with great anger because several people have died as a result from the attack in Yeonpyeongdo. Therefore it was not appropriate to be sarcastically mentioned within such satirical subject. Taking into consideration of how South Korea was in deep grief over the precious lives that were taken away and how many people reading this article would just consider the tragedy lightly based upon the article, I got very angry.

I saw that the author of the article had an e-mail address so I immediately began to type a mail to him. In the mail I expressed my complaints about the author’s choice to include the tragic happening in Yeonpyeongdo, and advised him to be careful next time when he writes an article likethis one, so that his words would not pierce through people’s hearts and make them sad.

Unfortunately, the author never replied. Although I had little hopes for his reply, I was still disappointed to see that no reply had been sent. From this experience, I’ve learned that one should always consider what he or she says before it is out to the public audience.

Words really do hurt and the most important thing is for everyone to learn from their mistakes.
