제가 다니는 고등학교는, 매년 10월에 ‘맥필드데이’ 라는 축제를 연답니다. 맥필드데이는 “스피릿 위크” 라고도 불리는데요, 우리 학교의 유명한 풋볼팀 감독 이름을 따서 만든 행사에요.

우리 학교는 풋볼팀이 뉴욕주 챔피언에 여러번 오를만큼 아주 실력이 뛰어난데 체육선생님인 맥 감독님의 지도덕분이었고 학생들에게 많은 용기와 자신감을 심어주었답니다. 그런데 이분이 몇 년전 심장마비로 갑자기 돌아가셨어요. 그후 매년 추모하는 이벤트와 운동회도 여는 맥필드데이를 하게 되었어요.
 
 

맥필드데이를 앞두고 9학년부터 12학년까지 학년별로 다른 색깔의 유니폼을 입고 자기 학년이 맡은 복도를 꾸민답니다.  우리가 복도를 꾸미는 이유는, 바로 어느 학년이 지정된 색깔에 맞춰서 가장 (단어가 생각이 안나요..^^)유니크 하게 복도를 꾸밀 수 있을지를 보기 위해서죠.
 
 

제일 잘 꾸민 학년은 50달러의 상금을 받게 되기 때문에, 학교전체가 모여서 몇 시간을 복도 꾸미는데에다가 투자를 한답니다. 이번에 우리 학년이 생각해낸 주제는 바로 “10월의 크리스마스”였어요.
 
 

우리가 10학년이고 또 10학년의 색깔이 빨강색이기 때문에 10월에 크리스마스 같은 분위기를 내서 우리의 센스가 이 정도라고 자랑하고 싶어서 선택한 거였지요.
 
  

우린 복도를 온통 빨강색 리본과 장식으로 뒤덮고, 크리스마스트리에 거는 불빛(?)장식도 가져와서 벽에 달았어요. 솜을 몇 봉투씩 사서 바닥에 뿌려서 눈처럼 보이게도 했고, 천장에는 종이로 만든 눈꽃장식들이 걸려 있었죠. 우리의 완성된 복도를 보고 지나가는 선생님들과 학생들의 감탄 속에서 우린 나름대로 무지 뿌듯했답니다.
 
 

복도 꾸미기 콘테스트가 끝나면 학교 전체 모두가 바비큐를 하러 밖에 나갑니다. 날씨는 추웠지만 맛있는 햄버거랑 핫도그에 만족을 하죠. 미국 학교의 재미있는 점은, 파티나 축제를 열 땐 항상 디제이를 초청 한다는 것이에요. 디제이가 틀어주는 음악에 모두들 흥겹게 춤을 추고 신나게 노래에 따라 부르기도 하죠.
 
 

다들 배부르게 먹고 춤추는 걸로 한창 들떠 있을 때, 우린 학년별로 나눠져 운동회를 열어요. 처음에 말한 것처럼 이 맥필드데이가 몇 년 전에 돌아가신 체육선생님을 추모하기 위해서 생긴 것이기 때문에 짧은 운동회를 하는거죠.

그 운동회에서 제일 신나는 대회는 줄다리기랍니다. 줄다리기 땐 학년별 남자들의 힘과 자존심이 걸려있기 때문에 서로 불꽃 튀는 경쟁을 펼치죠. 이번 줄다리기 땐 저희 학년과 제일 높은 학년이랑 펼쳤기 때문에 더욱더 긴장이 되었답니다.

왠지 그런 거 있잖아요. 나이가 많은 사람이 제일 힘세다는 고정관념은 저버리고 싶은 거. 그래서 우리 학년은 이때가 좋은 찬스다라고 생각하고 진짜 온몸을 다해 줄다리기를 했답니다. 그리곤 정말 기적처럼 우리 학년이 선배들을 제치고 줄다리기 1등을 차지했죠.

모두들 12학년들 오빠언니들의 실망한 표정을 보고 흡족했었죠. 그래서 며칠 동안 우리 학년은 12학년들 눈치를 봤답니다. 하지만 끝에는 이런 경쟁심이 중요하지가 않아요. 모두들 서로가 함께 어울려서 좋은 추억을 만들수 있다는거에 즐거워하고, 만족하기 때문이에요.

Mac Field Day

In October, our high school holds a “spirit week”, where everyone in the school shows their own school spirit. Each grade has their own color and we decorate our hallways with a specific theme that relates to that color.

For example, freshmen have yellow, so their theme might be “Sponge Bob” or “Pac Man” and such. The sophomores are red, and our idea this year was “Christmas in October”.
 
 

We brought in wrapped gifts and fake snowman, and hung up snowflakes and Christmas lights to give off a holiday mood. The juniors are green, so they transformed their hallway into a green forest. Lastly, the seniors are blue. Everyone expects their hallway to be the greatest because they are the highest grade.

But this year, I guess they ran out of ideas because they didn’t even bother to come up with a theme. They just filled their hallway with everything blue. When we are done with decorating our hallway, the faculty and staff members go around and decide whose hallway was decorated the best. To the grade that earns their recognition, they win 50 dollars.
 
 

When we are done with the hallway contest, we go outside where the teachers prepare barbecue for us. It’s a lot of fun because the DJ comes and plays music for us, where everyone gets very excited and break into random dances. We even have a dance battle, where few people from each grade are chosen to go out and dance against each other.
 
 

After the barbecue, we step inside to watch a film made in memory of Coach Mac, a beloved football coach of our school that passed away few years ago. Coach Mac loved to encourage kids to do their best in sports. He truly supported the students, and inspired many with his outgoing personality.

Therefore to remember Coach Mac, for the last event of the “spirit week” we have different sports competition. Some examples are relay races, tug-o-war, and volleyball. Tug-o-war is always the best game because it is fun to watch which grade has the best teamwork.
 
 

It was really fun this year because our grade, the sophomores beat the seniors in tug-o-war. All the grades except the seniors cheered and booed at the seniors. We were so proud to see the disappointments of the seniors. But in the end, it comes out to be a fun and exciting experience for everyone since they got to participate in sports activities and make great memories at their own school.
