캘리포니아 고교능력시험을 앞두고..CAHSEE tomorrow

내일은 CAHSEE 테스트가 있는 날이다. ‘California High School Exit Exam,’ 캘리포니아에서 고등학교를 졸업하고 졸업장을 받기 위해서는 이 시험을 꼭 통과해야 한다.

시험의 취지는 학생이 고등학교 과정을 이해했는가, 고등학교를 나갈 준비가 되었는가를 시험하기 위함이다. 듣기로는 이 시험은 절대 어렵지 않고, 아니 정말 너무 쉬워서 부담 가질 필요는 없다고 했다.

우리 형이 미국에 온지 1년차 됐을 때 이 시험을 봤다. 형은 그날 CAHSEE 시험이 있는지도 모르고 학교를 갔다가 시험을 보고 왔다. 턱걸이였지만 영어도 통과하고, 수학은 거의 만점이었다. 그걸 보고 ‘아 정말 쉬운거구나...’ 라고 생각했는데 의외로 실패하는 사람들이 많아서 조금 의아하기도 하다.

고등학교 2학년때 이 시험을 봐서 통과하면 더이상 보지 않아도 된다. 만약에 통과 못하면 고등학교 3학년때 다시 봐야하고, 또 실패하면 고등학교 4학년때 몇번이고 봐야 한다. 고등학교 4학년 전까지는 일년에 한번만 보게 한다.

이 시험은 이틀간 1교시부터 4교시까지를 진행되는 시험이라 선생님들도 싫어한다. 가뜩이나 재정난 때문에 수업일수도 적어젔는데 이런것 까지 겹치니 진도 스케줄이 복잡해저서 그렇다고 한다.

나같은 경우 Pre-Calculus 라는 클래스에 있는데 이 클래스는 수학과목으로는 두번째로 어려운 클래스 이다. 그래서 우리 선생님은 Algebra 2 이상부터는 CAHSEE 수학은 안보게 하면 안되냐고 불평을 하신다.

다른 아이들도 생각보다 긴장되나 보다. 어떤 애들은 시험을 대비한 공부를 하겠다고 하는데, 이런 애들을 비웃는 아이들도 있다. 이런걸 뭐하러 공부까지 하냐고. 하지만 너무 쉽다고 얕보다가 패스를 못하는 상황이 몇번 생기다 보니, 학교에선 통과한 학생들한테 상품을 준다. 예를 들면 off-campus lunch. 학교 밖에서 점심을 먹을 수 있다.

아무튼 내일이다. 생각보다 큰 시험이고, 캘리포니아 주에서 모든 고등학교에 의무로 하는 시험이기 때문에 조금 긴장된다. 워낙 선생님들이 겁도 많이 주고, 에세이도 써야한다고 하면서... 은근 스트레스를 준다.

당연히 통과 하겠지..^^

CAHSEE tomorrow.

If you are a student in California, you would know what CAHSEE is. It's California High School Exit Exam. You have to take it and pass it in order to get high school diploma. I heard it is very easy, and I can see that because my brother passed the test when it was only a year we came to United States. So, let's not worry about that.

You take this test in your sophomore year, and if you fail you have to take it over and over again until you pass the test. But, it is really easy, so there's hardly any student who don't pass the test. It takes 1st to 4th period, so teachers in those classes complain a lot because they get their schedule massed up.

Even though it's easy, it is pretty stressing. Some of my friends are even studying for it, and some of my friends, laugh at them.

Because the test is so easy, many student don't take it seriously, like a lot of students fail on purpose. So school came up with solution which was to give off-campus lunch pass to students who passed the test.
but for some students, it is a very big deal. Some, extremely rare, goes to community college and take CAHSEE class, and some of students fail until they graduate, so they get out of high school and take it afterwards. Some stay in high school because of sole reason of CAHSEE.

English teachers had prepare sessions for all of their classes to make sure all of the students pass, and in my opinion, it wasn't very easy.

Hope I pass tomorrow. My English should be better than that.
