The final tests have finally arrived. All the students feel the same. Pencils are neatly placed on the desk, and the students look at each other smiling and whishing the best luck to each other.
All of us are anxious to finish the test, anticipating the fun summer that is ahead of us. The high school that I go to in New York does not have an official date for the end of school before the summer vacation. It depends on what day your last test is on.
The last test date marks the end of school for the student. My friends and I were excited about this, because it meant that our school was going to be over earlier than the kids in middle school. However, it is very tiring taking multiple tests for several days.
First day included the English final exam. This day was pretty brief since it only had one exam for us to take. But we were far away from celebrating the beginning of summer vacation, since the biology and geometry regents were coming up. It was truly annoying because right after one test ended; you had to worry about the next one.
However, it is better than having all of the tests at once, because it would overwhelm the students, so I personally think that it is a good way to end the school year.
For the Biology and Geometry regents, we took the exams at the school gym instead of a regular classroom. There was individual desk for each row and everyone faced the front. In the front, the teachers looked over the students while we took the test.
We were given three hours for each of the two tests. The extra time helped to relax the students and most of us finished before time were up. After the tests were officially over, all of us were thrilled and said goodbye to one another.
It was weird not having the last day of school to spend time signing each other’s yearbooks and saying goodbye, but it is worth the extended time of summer vacation.
In Korea, they have a closing ceremony on the last day of school, which marks the official day of summer. On the other hand, the United States does not have any special events like that. Here, we just end the school with taking the final exams for each subject.
In the U.S., we also start our summer vacation approximately one moth sooner than Korea, and we get back to school around the beginning of September, so overall, we have about two and a half months of vacation.
However, the winter break is only two weeks celebrating Christmas and another week off in February. Therefore, many families plan their vacation over the summer and the kids look forward to the long vacation.
This summer I decided to visit Korea and I cannot wait!
드디어 학기말 시험이다. 책상 위에는 연필이 가지런히 놓여있고, 아이들은 긴장 속에서도 미소를 짓고 있다. 아이들 모두가 같은 느낌을 갖고 있다.
우린 모두 시험을 잘 치길 바라면서, 곧 다가올 여름방학을 기대했다. 내가 다니는 뉴욕의 고등학교는 학기가 끝나는 날이 따로 정해져 있지 않고, 시험을 보면 끝이다. 중학교 때는 끝까지 수업을 하고 끝났지만, 고등학교 입학한 뒤로는 시험과 함께 여름방학이 시작되 우리 모두 긴장속에 흥분을 한다.
그러나 며칠간 학기말 시험을 치러야 하기 때문에 이 기간은 아주 힘들고 지루하다. 첫번째 날은 한 과목만 시험을 봤기 때문에 괜찮았지만 아직도 생물과 수학 리젠트 시험이 남아 여름방학을 생각 할 여유는 없었다. 시험이 하나 끝나면 또 계속 돼 짜증이 난다.
그래도 한국과는 달리 하루에 한 두 과목 시험만 보면 되니까 미국 시스템이 더 나은거 같다. 리젠트 시험은 뉴욕 주 전체에서 보는 시험인데, 그 학교 학생들을 수준을 비교해 보는것이다.
한꺼번에 많은 학생들이 시험을 보기 때문에, 교실에서 하지 않고 학교 체육관에서 시험을 본다. 학생들이 앉을 수 있는 책상이 줄지어 있고, 모두가 앞 쪽을 바라보고 앉게 된다. 그리고 선생님들은 시험보는 학생들을 감시한다. (이런건 한국과 똑같다^^)
리젠트 시험은 과목당 세시간이 주어지지만 대부분 아이들이 일찍 끝내고 나온다. 학기말 시험이 다 끝나면 그제서야 아이들은 얼굴이 맑게 개인 하늘처럼 밝아진다. 몇명이서 수다를 떨고나서 작별 인사를 한다.
미국에는 학기가 끝나면 Yearbook이 나오는데, 졸업 앨범 같은 것이다. 한국처럼 졸업생만 받는게 아니라 학생들 모두가 받을 수 있다. 1년간 생활한 학생들 활동사진들이 있어서 보는 눈이 즐겁다.
한국에서는 방학을 앞두고 종업식(Closing School Ceremony?)이라는 것을 하지만 미국에선 그런게 없다. 그냥 과목별로 정해진 시간에 가서 학기말 시험을 보면 그걸로 끝이다. 한국보다는 한달 정도 일찍 방학에 들어가고 새로운 학년이 시작되는 9월 초까지 두달 반은 쉴 수 있다.
하지만 겨울은 2주간의 크리스마스 홀리데이와 2월에 1주일간의 짧은 방학이 있을뿐이다. 그래서 미국 아이들은 여름방학을 너무도 기다리고 가족과 여행을 하거나 여러가지 체험을 하는데 시간을 많이 보내는것 같다.
나도 여름엔 한국에 간다. 너무도 보고 싶은 한국 친구들. 마음은 벌써 한국에 가 있다. ^^
