‘21세기의 학생들’ Students in the 21st Century

21세기의 첫 10년을 마감하고 새해를 맞이하면서 필자는 교육자로서 다음과 같은 질문을 생각해본다. 어떻게 하면 우리 학생들이 급속도로 변해가는, 새로운 문제와 가능성으로 가득찬 이 세상에 대처해 나갈 수 있을까?

몇주 전 뉴욕타임즈 기사에서 “요즘 학생들이 얼마나 web에 의존하며 살고 있는가” 라는 기사를 읽었다. 그 기사는 일례로 어떤 학생들은 매달 몇 천개의 문자를 보내고, 밤늦게까지 숙제를 뒤로 미룬 채 Facebook에 매달리는 한편, 어떤 학생들은 이러한 기술 혁신을 통해 진정한 열정(熱情)을 찾기도 한다고 전했다.

바야흐로 21세기를 맞아 대부분의 학생들은 그들에게 주어진 모든 테크놀로지를 잘 활용하고 있다. 그러나 아직까지는 학교가 이런 학생들의 요구를 충족(充足)시키지 못하고 있다.

이제 우리의 도전은 21세기의 환경에 걸맞는 학교를 새로이 만듦으로써 점점 더 다양하고 국제적이며 상호 연결적인(interconnected) 세상에서 학생들이 성공적으로 살아남기 위한 필요한 기술을 습득(習得)하는데 있다.

학부모로서, 선생으로, 한 고등학교의 교장으로, 나는 학생들이 가진 최대한의 가능성을 이루기 위해, 또한 그들의 숨은 열정을 파악하기 위해 필요한 기술을 익히도록 돕고자 노력해 왔다.

그러면 21세기의 기술이란 무엇일까? 우리의 아이들의 성공적인 삶을 위해 필요한 기술은 무엇이며 어떻게 부모와 교사, 학교가 도와줄 수 있을까?

21세기 학생들을 위한 전국적 대안단체인 The Partnership for the 21st Century Skills 에 따르면 모든 학생들에게 필수적인 일련의 기술이 있다. 핵심과목인 수학, 과학 그리고 인문과목들은 물론이고 창의력(創意力)과 혁신(革新), 비판적인 사고(思考)와 문제해결 능력, 커뮤니케이션과 공동협력(collaboration) 과 같은 배움과 혁신기술이 아주 중요하다는 것이다.

부가적으로 요즘의 학생들은 21세기의 Media 문화에 몰입(沒入)하여 사는 digital 세대이기 때문에 정보, 미디어, 기술교양도 갖춰야 한다. 또한 복잡하고 글로벌한 경쟁이 불가피한 정보시대를 효과적으로 대비하려면 삶을 통한 경험의 기술적인 면이 반드시 동반(同伴)되어야 한다.

25년전 교편을 잡은 이후 줄곧, 나는 21세기의 이런 기술을 학생들과 내 두 아이에게 항상 강조해왔다. 지식의 전달과 수용이 이제는 더 이상 교과서에 국한(局限)되지 않기 때문에, 학생들에게 창조적이고 비판적인 사고를 하도록 함으로써 그들이 실제 세상의 문제들을 다룰 수 있도록 해야만 한다.

또한, 우리는 학생들이 다른 사람들과 함께 협력하고 효율적인 커뮤니케이션 기술을 개발할 수 있도록 도와야 한다. 개인적으로 교사 경력을 돌이켜 볼 때, 두뇌가 우수한 많은 학생들이 시험 성적에서는 쉽게 A를 받는데 다른 사람들과의 협력면이나 문제해결 능력에서는 낙제(落第)를 하는 사례를 보아 왔다.

물론 교사와 학교가 먼저 이런 기술을 가르쳐야 하겠지만 부모야말로 학생에게는 최초이자 가장 중요한 교사라는 점에서 21세기의 아이들을 준비시키기 위해 학부모들이 몇 가지 꼭 해야 할 일들이 있다.

- 학생들이 수학과 과학과목을 가능한 많이 택할 수 있게 하고 또한 대학과정의 AP 또한 IB 과목과 외국어 과목을 학교에서 들게끔 격려하자.

- 커뮤니케이션과 공동협력 능력을 기를 수 있는 기회를 제공하자. 배움과 문제 해결의 가장 중요한 형태 중 일부는 그룹 설정(Group settings)에서 발생한다. 그러므로 자녀들이 대인관계(對人關係) 능력을 키울 수 있도록 자원봉사(自願奉仕)를 하거나 조직화된 단체에서 일할 수 있게 권장하자.

- 우리는 Facebook, Twitter 와 web 2.0 같은 도구를 통하여 연결되고, 창의적이고 공동협력하며 배움의 터전이 되는 digital세상에서 아이들을 키우고 있다. 자녀들이 세계적인 시민으로서 성공적인 삶을 영위(營爲)하고 정보와 기술습득 능력을 획득하도록 적극적으로 주문하자.

- 최상의 삶과 경력의 기술을 습득하기 위한 유연성(柔軟性)과 적응력(適應力), 창의성(創意性), 생산성(生産性), 책임감(責任感) 및 리더십 능력을 갖추도록 자녀들을 격려하자.

다가오는 새해를 맞이하면서, 학부모와 교사들은 우리 학생들이 도전적이고 경쟁적인 21세기의 환경에서 성공할 수 있도록 긴밀한 관계를 구축하여 함께 노력해 나가야 할 것이다.

Students in the 21st Century

As we end the first decade of the 21st century and welcome the new year, I am thinking about the following question: How will our students be prepared for a rapidly changing world filled with fantastic new problems as well asexciting new possibilities?

A few weeks ago on the front page of the New York Times there was an article about how today’s students are growing up in a world of always on connections, to each other and the web. The article showcased students who send thousands of text messages a month, stay up very late because they are on Facebook, avoid their homework, and others who find their true passion because of technology.

Technically it is the 21st century and most of our students have embraced the technology available to them; however our schools are not there, and our challenge now is to reinvent the schools for the 21st century so that our students have the necessary skills to be successful in an increasingly diverse, globalized and interconnected world. As a parent, teacher, and now as high school principal, I have always tried to encourage today’s kids to acquire the necessary skills to reach their potential and discover their passion.

So what are 21st century skills? What are the skills that our kids need in order to be successful and how can parents, teachers and schools encourage our kids to obtain these skills?

According to The Partnership for the 21st Century Skills, a national organization that advocates for 21st century readiness for every student, there are set of skills that will be essential for all students. In additionto learning the core subjects in Math, Science and Humanities, the following Learning and Innovation Skills are going to be important: Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Communication and Collaboration.

Additionally, because today’s students are digital learnerswhose entire lives have been immersed in the 21st century media culture, they must possess Information, Media, and Technology Literacy. Finally, to prepare students to navigate the complex life and work environments in the globally competitive information age, students must develop Life and Career Skills.

Since I started teaching twenty-five years ago, I always tried to emphasize the 21st century skills to my students as well as to my own two children. Because teaching and learning is no longer textbook-driven, we have to engage students in addressing real-world problems that allow them to be creative and critical thinking.

Also, we have to encourage our students to collaborate with others and to develop effective communication skills. Throughout my teaching career, I have seen many bright students who are very good at getting As on tests; however, when it comes to working with other students and problem-solving, I would give them a failing grade.

Of course teachers and schools must teach these important skills; however, because parents are children’s first and most important teachers, there are a number of things that parents can do to make sure their children are prepared for the 21st century. 

- Encourage your child to take as many math and science courses in school as possible. Also, encourage your child to take college level (AP or IB) and foreign language classes. Every student should takethe most rigorous and challenging courses available to them in schools. 

- Provide opportunities for studentsto develop communication and collaboration skills. Some of the most important forms of learning and problem solving occur in group settings. Therefore, encourage your child to volunteer or work in organized groups where they can develop important interpersonal skills.

- We are raising our kids in a digital world of Facebook, Twitter, and Web 2.0 tools that enable them to connect, collaborate, create, and engage in learning that will help them be successful in an interconnected global society. As parents, we have to encourage our children to acquire this information and technology literacy so that they can become global citizens. 

- Encourage your child todevelop adequate life and careerskills such as flexibility, adaptability, initiative, productivity, accountability, leadership, and responsibility.

As we look forward to the new year, parents and teachers must work in partnership to prepare students to be successful in a challenging globally competitive work environment of the 21st century.
