It is hard to believe that it has been over six months since returning to my motherland, Korea. After almost forty years living in the States, I made a very difficult decision to leave everything behind. Why would anybody leave a good job, family and friends and travel a half way around the world to start a new job in an unfamiliar place called Jeju?
모국땅에 돌아온지 벌써 6개월도 더 지났다는게 실감이 나지 않는다. 거의 40년간을 미국서 살다가 모든 것을 뒤로 한 채 한국에 돌아가기로 한 것은 쉽지 않은 결정이었다. 왜 좋은 직업과 가족 친구를 놔두고 홀로 지구 반바퀴를 돌아 한국에 가냐고 만류한 이도 많았다. 그것도 고향도 아닌 제주에 말이다.
I have been an educator for the past twenty five years and I’d like to think that I have impacted thousands of students in my career. Starting out as a Biology teacher in New York City, becoming an assistant principal and then last six years as a Principal at Dobbs Ferry High School, it has been a rewarding career. However, something was missing and I began my search to find even more meaningful endeavor.
난 25년을 교육자로 살아왔다. 수많은 학생들과 交感(교감)하는 것을 좋아했던 것 같다. 뉴욕시의 생물교사로 교직생활을 시작해 교감이 되었고 지난 6년간은 답스페리 하이스쿨의 교장으로 봉직했다. 좋은 경력을 쌓았지만 무언가 아쉬움이 남았다. 좀더 의미있는 노력을 기울이고 싶었다.
I have always had fond memories of Korea and my summer visits to my motherland during college days to learn and experience the culture that I had lost growing up in America was the impetus for my decision to come here to a place being called the Jeju Global Education City (JGEC). My school, North London Collegiate School (NLCS) Jeju is the first international school to open to reverse the trend of sending approximately 20,000 young Korean students to study abroad, which causes lots of problems. By opening this education city where official language spoken is English, it will allow students to learn within their own culture and avoid the social issue that comes with “wild geese” families.
내 기억속엔 항상 한국이 자리하고 있었다. 대학시절 모국인 한국을 방문하면서 미국에서 성장기를 보내는 동안 잊었던 문화를 체험했던 경험이 지금 이곳 제주글로벌교육도시(JGEC)에 오게 된 動因(동인)이 되었다. 내가 몸담게 된 노스런던 컬리지에이트스쿨(NLCS) 제주는 약 2만여명의 조기유학생들이 외국으로 떠나면서 적잖은 부작용을 낳는 것을 개선할 목적으로 개교했다. 학교의 공식언어는 영어지만 동시에 한국문화를 배우도록 하고 ‘기러기가족’으로 불리는 사회적 문제를 해소하는 것이다.
One of the main reasons for coming back to my motherland was to share with students all the benefits that I have enjoyed as being a Korean-American. Knowing and embracing two cultures have truly shaped who I am and in a way made me be more like a “global citizen.” I truly believe that we need to have an education system that produces global citizens in an ever increasing interconnected world. Although I enjoyed educating American students for the past twenty five years, this opportunity to return to my homeland to educate Korean students was something that I have always wanted to do.
모국에 오게 된 주요 이유중 하나는 미국의 한인으로서 내가 향유한 것들을 학생들과 나누고 싶다는 것이다. 두 개의 문화를 포용하고 이해하는 것은 스스로의 정체성과 ‘글로벌 시민’으로 성장하는 방편이기도 하다. 서로 영향을 주고받는 세계속에서 글로벌시민을 양성하는 참 교육시스템을 갖는 것은 정말 중요하다. 지난 25년간 내가 미국의 학생들을 가르치며 갖게 된 보람을 이제 모국의 학생들을 위해 나누게 된 것이 너무나 기쁘다.
As people may have guessed, opening up a brand new international school in Jeju is not an easy task and there have been many obstacles and challenges for the past six months. However, with the hard work and efforts of many people the school is now well established and is offering a rigorous and challenging education to all students.
제주에 새로운 국제학교를 개교하는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니다. 사실 지난 6개월간 많은 장애물과 도전과제들이 있었다. 그러나 많은 사람들이 부단히 노력하고 협력하여 학교의 토대를 닦았고 활기차고 도전적인 교육을 학생들에게 제공하게 되었다.
Currently, I am the Head of Junior School (elementary school) and it is exciting and very rewarding to see Korean children as young as four and five year olds speaking and developing English skills. I remember when my parents immigrated to the States and learning the alphabet for the first time at the age of eleven! In addition to providing ambitious education, at NLCS Jeju Junior School we are trying to encourage students to become caring young adults who contribute to the community that they live in. Last December, the children raised a lot of money during the holiday and donated stationary and toys to local orphanage. Although it was a small gesture, seeing the smiles on the faces of orphans was priceless.
현재 나는 노스런던스쿨 제주의 주니어스쿨(초등학교) 교장을 맡고 있다. 너댓살 수준의 영어를 구사하는 아이들을 대상으로 가르치는 일은 즐겁고 보람있는 일이다. 부모님이 미국에 이민왔을 때 열한살이었던 나는 그때 겨우 알파벳을 아는 수준이었다. 이곳에선 훌륭한 교육과정외에도 학생들이 장차 한국사회에 기여하는 건강한 청년들로 성장하도록 깊은 관심을 기울인다. 지난해 12월 방학기간중 학생들은 적잖은 돈을 모아서 학용품들을 산 후 인근의 고아원에 기부했다, 비록 작은 성의였지만 고아원 아이들의 환한 얼굴을 보는 것은 돈으로 따질 수 없을만큼 고귀한 것이었다.
Of course we are at the beginning stage of establishing a prestigious school, but I truly believe and hope that we will produce the next generation of Koreans that will benefit not only the people of Korea but the world community.
물론 우리가 (영국에서의 명성처럼) 명문학교가 되기 위해선 아직도 많은 노력을 기울여야 한다. 그러나 나는 믿는다. 그리고 소망한다. 우리가 대한민국 국민들은 물론, 세계인들에게도 꼭 필요한 한국의 다음 세대를 양성할 수 있다고.
