“얀 할머니 기억하며 위안부범죄 알려요”

'배상과 교육을 위한 위안부 행동'(CARE)의 김현정(Phyllis Kim) 대표가 미국에서 진행중인 ‘위안부’ 알리기 활동을 소개하는 강연을 한국 KOWIN 행사와 미국 대학에서 잇따라 펼쳤다.

 

지난 9월 3일 뉴욕 퀸스 칼리지 (민병갑 교수 수업)에서 학생들을 상대로 강의 했고 앞서 8월 27일엔 한국 청주에서 전세계에서 500여명의 여성들이 참가한 제 19회 세계한민족여성네트워크 (KOWIN)에서 강연을 가졌다.

 

한국 체류중 연합뉴스와의 인터뷰에서 김현정 대표는 “일본군 위안부 할머니들이 계속 돌아가시고 있다. 전쟁 당시 끔찍한 국가 주도의 성노예 제도가 있었다는 사실을 계속 알리고 교육하는 것이 아주 중요하다”고 강조했다.

 

김현정 대표는 현재 이용수 할머니를 비롯한 할머니들의 증언을 녹화해 영상으로 재생하는 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다. 할머니들이 증언하는 모습을 녹화해 영상을 박물관이나 도서관에 설치하는 내용이다.

이 프로젝트는 서강대가 제작을 맡고 있으며 ‘위안부행동’은 미국의 많은 기관에 이러한 영상을 설치하도록 긴밀한 연락을 취하고 있다.

 

이와 함께 미국의 고등학교 역사 교사들을 위한 수업지도를 위해 '교사 참고용 자료집'도 만들어 내년 초 무료로 배부할 계획이다.

 

오는 10월 중순에는 LA에서 '일본군 위안부 영화제'도 열어 일본인 미키 데자키 감독이 만든 영화 '주전장'을 비롯한 작품들이 미국인과 재미동포들을 위해 上映(상영)된다.

 

김현정 대표는 서구 최초로 일본의 위안부범죄를 고발한 호주 출신의 인권운동가 얀 오헤른 할머니를 추모하는 행사를 로스앤젤레스 시의회에서 가졌다고 소개했다.

김현정 대표는 “인권의 영웅으로 모범을 보이신 오헤른 할머니를 추모하기 위해 로스앤젤레스 시의회에서 지난 6일, 데이빗 류 시의원의 주도로 행사를 가졌다. 행사엔 3.1여성 동지회 회장님 및 회원 여러분, 묘경스님, 김요한 신부님 등이 참석했다. 얀 할머니는 타계 이후에도 전 세계인들에게 양심의 울림을 전해주고 계신다”고 전했다.

"Jan Ruff-O'Herne, Who Told of Wartime Rape by the Japanese, Dies at 96"

Council President - Colleagues -

 

I would like to adjourn this meeting in honor of Jan Ruff-O’Herne.

 

Jan was a survivor -

 

An advocate -

 

And a hero for victims of sexual slavery everywhere.

 

Jan was born in 1923 in the Dutch East Indies -

 

A former colony of the Dutch Empire.

 

War broke out during her childhood -

 

And during the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies -

 

Jan and thousands of other Dutch women -

 

were forced into prisoner-of-war camps.

 

Jan become one of the hundreds of thousands of comfort women -

 

During World War II -

 

Who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese Imperial Army.

 

During her time in these camps -

 

Jan was abused -

 

Denied her freedom -

 

And contact with her family.

 

But Jan survived on hope -

 

And the support of the other women who were also being victimized.

 

Following the War - and Jan’s liberation -

 

She stayed silent for many years. (P)

 

Like many comfort women - she lived in shame -

 

And as a result - the world nearly forgot what happened to these women.

 

But in 1992 - Jan decided to speak out - and share her story -

 

publishing a memoir titled “50 Years of Silence”.

 

Jan’s courage to speak out -

 

Made her a hero to the many survivors who had been living in silence. (P)

 

She testified before Congress -

 

Worked with the Human Rights Commission -

 

And was recognized by Australia’s Prime Minister -

 

For her leadership in fighting to honor her fellow victims.

 

Jan’s story is a profile in courage - resilience - and strength. (P)

 

It is also an example - of how wide-spread the comfort women system was.

 

Hundreds of thousands of women - from nations across Asia -

 

Including Dutch women like Jan -

 

Were forced into bondage - and sexual slavery during this war.

 

These women suffered unspeakable trauma -

 

And exhibited incredible courage in sharing their truth. (P)

 

Their history should never be forgotten -

 

And their work to recognize and honor the comfort women victims -

 

Should not die in vain. (PAUSE)

 

Jan Ruff O’Herne died surrounded by loved ones on August 19th of this year-

 

She is survived by her daughters -

 

Eileen and Carol.

 

She will be missed -

 

And she will be remembered.

 

May she rest in peace.
