LA소녀상, 故 곽예남할머니추모제

캘리포니아 글렌데일 평화의 소녀상 앞에서 지난 9일, 세계여성의날을 맞아 한국계, 중국계, 일본계 및 로컬 커뮤니티가 함께 모여 ‘침묵을 깨는 여성들’을 기념하는 자리를 가졌다.

이와 함께 최근 타계한 故 곽예남 할머니를 추모하는 행사도 함께 했다. 이 행사는 LA 한인회와 코윈 엘에이의 후원으로 준비되었다

이날 최재영 목사는 고인을 위한 기도를 이끌어 주었고, 글렌데일 폴라 디바인 시의원은 글렌데일 시를 대표하여 참석자들을 환영하고 여성의 날 의미에 대해 이야기했다.

아르메니안 아메리칸 박물관 소장 샨트 사하키안은 박물관 프로젝트에 대해 소개하며 아르메니안 역사 뿐 아니라 우리 할머니들의 이야기도 중요한 일부가 될 것이라고 설명했다.

또한 LA 한인회 로라 전 회장이 축사(祝辭)를 했고, 코윈 엘에이 조길원 회장이 헌화(獻花)를, 중국계 대표로 마크 리우씨가 세계 여성의 날을 축하했다.

캘리포니아 상원의원 앤토니 포르탄티토 의원은 가주한미포럼 김현정 대표에게 '위안부' 이슈를 알리는 데 공헌한 데 대해 공로상을 수여했다. 또한 일본계 활동가이자 극작가, 배우인 트레이시 카토-키리야마에게, '위안부' 이슈에 대해 목소리를 내고 최근에는 일본 강제수용에 대한 연극인 ‘Tales of Clamor’를 제작한 공로로 ‘침묵을 깨는 여성들’ 상을 수여했다.

중국계 여성 세명이 ‘피지 못한 꽃송이’라는 시를 낭송(朗誦)했고, 중국계 합창단에 제2차 세계대전에 대한 노래를 합창으로 선사했다.

옥시덴탈 칼리지 학생 두명은 여성인권운동의 애창곡이 된 ‘Quiet’을 듀엣으로 불렀다. 마지막 슨서로 모든 참가자들은 서로의 손을 잡고 ‘우리 승리하리라’를 함께 불렀다.

점심을 하면서 참가자들은 ‘위안부의 목소리’ 자료가 유네스코 세계 기록유산에 등재되어야 하는 이유에 대해 개별 인터뷰를 했다.

가주한미포럼 김현정 대표는 “올해도 변함없이 화환을 보내주신 국군포로송환위원회에 깊은 감사의 말씀을 드린다. 또한 보이지 않는 곳에서 수고해 주신 모든 자원봉사자들 Stephanie, Janette, Darby, Edwin Chen, Paul Hsu, Minju, Catherine, Sean, 참석해 주시고 응원해 주신 여러분 모두께 감사드린다”고 말했다.

International Women's Day and the "Women Breaking Silence."

On Saturday, supperters from the Chinese, Korean, Japanese and local community came together in Glendale to celebrate International Women's Day and the "Women Breaking Silence."

Reverend Jay Choi led a prayer to remember the recently passed Grandma Kwak. Glendale Council member Paula Devine welcomed the crowd and delivered a speech about the importance of the International Women's Day. The Executive Director of the Armenian American Museum Shant Sahakian, the President of the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles California Laura Jeon, a leader from the Chinese American community Mark Liu spoke in solidarity.

Senator Anthony Portantino awarded Phyllis Kim for her contribution in advocating the "Comfort Women" issue. For the "Woman Breaking Silence Award," Senator Portantino awarded Traci Kato-Kiriyama, a fierce activist, writer, actor who has recently created and participated in a play Tales of Clamor, a story of breaking silence about the Japanese Internment camp experience.

Three women from the Chinese community recited a poem, A Bud That Never Blossom, and a choir from the Chinese community sang a song. A duet from the Occidental College students sang "Quiet" - a song about breaking silence and empowering women.

We all sang "We shall overcome" holding each other's hands at the end.

Attendees also gave individual interviews about why it is important to register "Voices of the 'Comfort Women'" dossier in the UNESCO's Memory of the World program.

This event was a success because of our volunteers who worked behind the scene - Stephanie, Janette, Darby, Edwin Chen, Paul Hsu, Minju, Catherine, Sean, the singers and the choir!!
