민경완부회장 태국왕실 초청 화제

한국의 언론인이 태국 왕실이 주최하는 행사에 세계적인 인물들과 나란히 초청(招請)을 받아 화제가 되고 있다.

주인공은 민경완 재외동포신문방송편집인협회(재외편협) 수석 부회장이다. 민경완 부회장은 태국 왕실의 ‘마히돌 왕자 재단’(Prince Mahidol Award Foundation)이 개최한 ‘2018년도 공공보건 부문’ 시상식에 공식 초청을 받고 지난 29일 출국했다.

민경완 부회장은 31일 열린 시상식에 백신 관련 세계적인 과학자 존 클레멘스(Dr.John Clemens) 국제백신연구소(IVI) 전 사무총장과 함께 참석했다. 클레멘스 박사는 스웨덴의 면역학자 잔 홈그렌(Jan Holmgren) 교수와 공동 수상하며 10만 달러의 상금도 받았다.

IVI(국제백신연구소)는 UN산하 기구로 민경완 부회장은 클레멘스 사무총장의 특별보좌관으로 한국정부와 북한프로젝트를 총괄하는 등 15년간 동고동락(同苦同樂) 했다.

존 클레멘스 박사는 방글라데시 다카에 본부가 있는 ICDDR,B 사무총장으로서, 지난 30여 년간 세계 공공보건 환경개선 및 저개발국의 신생아 및 아이들을 위한 백신개발과 보급하는 활동을 이어왔다. 세계 각국의 지도자들은 그간 존 클레멘스 박사의 인종을 초월한 인류애적 기여(寄與)에 지지를 보내기도 했다.

시상식 전날 존 클레멘스 박사는 이번 행사에 참석하는 미국 스웨덴 등지의 유명 과학자들을 초청하여 만찬을 가졌다. 민경완 부회장은 “이 가운데는 차기 노벨 의학상 유력 후보인 브라이언 드루커(Brian Drucker) 교수도 함께 하는 등 많은 관심을 받았다”고 귀띔했다.

클레멘스 박사와 민경완 부회장은 태국 왕실에서 제공한 벤츠 차량으로 호텔에서 출발, 경찰의 호위를 받으며 왕궁에 들어가는 특별한 예우로 눈길을 끌었다.

이번 행사를 주최한 마히돌 왕자 재단(Prince Mahidol Award Foundation)의 이사장 마하 착리 공주(Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn)는 “존 클레멘스 박사는 인체에 안전하고 효과적인 백신개발 및 보급에 헌신해 왔다”며 “차카 백신개발 및 홍보, 공로에 대한 업적을 본 재단이 높이 사게 되어 상을 수여하게 되어 영광스럽다”고 밝혔다.

민경완 수석부회장은 “백신관련 세계적인 과학자 Dr.John Clemens 박사와 스웨덴 출신 면역학자인 Jan Holmgren, 그리고 차기 노벨의학상 후보인 백혈병 전문의 Brian Druker 등 세계적인 석학들과 함께 해 영광”이라면서 “특히 태국주재 각국 대사들을 귀빈으로 초청한 이날 행사를 위해 태국 왕실에서 제공한 차량으로 가는 동안 경찰의 호위 등 특별한 예우와 배려에 감동 받았다”고 전했다.

Prince Mahidol Award Foundation

The Prince Mahidol Award Foundation was established by the royal permission of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej , in accordance with the proposal of Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, in commemoration of the Centenary Birthday Anniversary of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla on January 1st, 1992.
