원형준, 런던서 ‘남북화해 바이올린’ 토크콘서트

바이올린으로 평화운동을 하는 원형준 린덴바움 음악감독이 8일 런던에서 ‘한반도 음악외교’를 주제로 토크콘서트를 갖는다.

원형준 음악 감독은 지난 9월 유엔이 주관하는 2017 제네바 평화회담에 한국인 연설자로 참석해 화제를 모은 주인공이다. 지난 4월엔 제네바국제대학원에서 연주특강을 갖고 남북이산가족 등 한반도의 현실과 아픔을 전하면서 ‘고향의 봄’을 들려주기도 했다.

SOAS 런던대학교 올프슨 렉처시어터에서 열리는 토크콘서트에서 원형준 감독은 ‘파가니니 카프리스 24번’(Paganini Caprice No.24.) 연주와 함께 자신과 음악을 통한 남북화해(南北和解)의 이야기를 들려주고 청중과 질의응답도 갖게 된다.

이에 앞서 6일엔 스위스 로잔의 올림픽 박물관에서 토머스 바흐, IOC 위원장 및 IOC 정책 위원회 인사들 앞에서 평화 독주회를 갖는다.

8일 행사가 개최되는 SOAS 런던대학교는 아시아·중동·아프리카 지역학을 전문으로 하는 세계적인 명성의 대학으로, 재학생의 절반 이상이 영국 외 다른 국가에서 온 국제학생들로 이루어져 있다.

원형준 감독은 지난 9월엔 ‘유엔 세계 평화의 날’을 기념하여 유엔 주관 ‘2017 제네바 평화 회담(Geneva Peace Talk 2017)’에 한국인 최초 연설자로 참여해 한반도 이슈에 대해 이야기 했다.

또 지난해 12월엔 뉴욕주 시라큐스 대학과 맨해튼 리디머 교회에서 ‘북한 이슈’로 토론하고 토크 콘서트를 가졌다.

그는 평양, 스위스 제네바, 독일, 판문점 등에서 남북 연합 오케스트라를 추진했고, 2013년 10월엔 판문점 중립국위원회 60주년 초청으로 역사상 처음으로 군사분계선 인근에서 피아니스트 김정권, 첼리스트 강혜지, 테너 김세일과 함께 작은 음악회를 열기도 했다.

줄리아드 음대에서 수학했고 한국일보, 이화경향, 킹스빌 국제 콩쿠르에서 1등을 수상한 이력(履歷)의 그는 서울 시향, KBS 교향악단 등과 협연 및 옥스퍼드, 하버드, 프린스턴, 죠지타운, 파리정치대학 TED-X, 제네바 국제 대학원 등에서 초청 강연 및 연주를 하였다. 하버드 대학, Kirkland House 명예위원이기도 하다.

그가 음악을 통해 한반도 통일을 생각하게 된 계기는 1990년 세계경제포럼으로 거슬러 올라간다. 그 행사에서 독일 통일을 축하하는 음악을 연주하며 그는 음악이 화해의 매개체(媒介體)가 될 수 있다는 영감에 사로잡혔다.

“평화는 하모니다. 서로 다른 악기들이 아름다운 화음을 만들 때 우리는 평화를 느낀다”고 말하는 그는 지난 8년간 그는 남북 청년 음악가들을 모아 판문점에서 오케스트라 연주를 열기 위해 많은 노력을 기울여 있다. 통일 콘서트가 막판 무산되는 아픔을 겪기도 했지만 원형준 감독은 “한반도에 음악의 힘으로 화해의 훈풍(薰風)이 불어오는 날이 반드시 올 것으로 확신하고 있다”고 말했다.

“Peace is harmony. When different instruments are able to make beautiful sounds, we can feel peace.”

Mr. Won Hyung Joon is a world-renowned South Korean violinist and peace activist working towards an inter-Korean orchestra comprising musicians from North and South Korea. Inspired by Edward Said and Daniel Barenboim's West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, Mr. Won firmly believes in the power of music in achieving harmony and peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Mr. Won was most recently invited to perform at the the United Nations Palais des Nations to commemorate World Peace Day 2017 and his story has been featured in a number of international news outlets. In 2013 he was invited to perform at Panmunjom in the Demilitarised Zone with the supports the Swiss and Sweden members of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission.

The evening will begin with a recital of Paganini Caprice No.24. Mr. Won will then share his story and vision to reconcile differences between North and South Korea through the power of music. The evening will be concluded with a short Q&A with the audience.

Background: In 1990 Mr. Won performed at the World Economic Forum which was celebrating the 1990 reunification of East and West Germany. It was this event that first inspired him to see music as a medium for reconciliation. Over the past 8 years he has attempted on multiple occasions to bring young North and South Korean musicians together to perform a peace concert. Attempts have been made in the Korean Demilitarised Zone and even Germany, however on each occasion, the agreements fell through. Mr. Won, however, has not given up and is confident that one day musical harmony will be made on the Korean Peninsula.
