美독립기념일연휴 역대 최다 이동

올해 미 독립기념일(7월 4일) 연휴기간 50마일(약 80km) 이상의 여행(旅行)을 떠나는 미국내 숫자가 역대 최다인 4,420만 명으로 전망됐다.

전미자동차연합(AAA)은 주말인 지난달 30일부터 4일까지 약 4,420만 명이 자동차와 기차, 비행기, 선박 등을 이용해 50마일 이상의 여행을 할 것으로 보인다고 말했다. 이는 지난해보다 2.9%(약 125만명) 증가한 것으로 사상 최대다.

올해는 독립기념일이 화요일이어서 샌드위치 데이인 월요일까지 휴일로 삼은 이들이 많다. AAA 이스트 센트럴의 짐 리먼 회장은 “경기도 호조를 보이는데다가 특히 올해는 저유가의 영향으로 휘발유값도 저렴(低廉)해 자동차를 이용해 여행을 떠나는 사람이 더욱 증가할 것으로 예상된다”고 말했다.

연휴기간 예상되는 미 전국 평균 휘발유값은 갤런당 2달러28센트로, 지난해보다 4센트 더 저렴하다. 항공기를 통한 여행객도 8년 연속 증가할 것으로 보인다. 항공기의 경우 평균 10%, 승용차의 경우 14%정도 지난해보다 여행경비를 절약(節約)하게 될 것으로 보인다.

독립기념일 당일엔 지난해 760만명에서 3.2% 늘어난 780만명으로, 자동차 여행자는 지난해 670만명에서 3.3% 늘어난 690만명으로 각각 예상됐다.

AAA: Historic Independence Day travel season seen ahead

This Independence Day, a record-breaking 44.2 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home, taking to the nation's roads, skies, rails, and waterways to honor the red, white, and blue. With 1.25 million more travelers than last year, 2017 will be marked as the most traveled Independence Day holiday weekend ever.

"More Americans are eager to take advantage of the strong economy and celebrate with family and friends," said Jim Lehman, President of AAA East Central. "Steady gas prices are providing an extra spark for 4th of July travel plans."

The Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as June 30-July 4.

Independence Day travelers will total 7.8 million, an increase of 3.2% from 7.6 million in 2016.

6.9 million will travel by automobile, up 3.3% from 6.7 million in 2016.

354,000 people will fly to their destinations, up 2.9% from 344,000 in 2016.

581,000 people will use other modes (bus, train, boat, etc.), up 2.6% from 566,000 in 2016.

The national average gas price is 4 cents cheaper than this same time last year. With today's national average price for a gallon of gas at $2.28, prices remain historically low for the summer travel season.

The vast majority of travelers -- 37.5 million people across America -- will drive to their Independence Day destinations, an increase of 2.9 percent over last year. Air travel is expected to increase 4.6 percent over last year, with 3.44 million Americans taking to the skies this Independence Day. Travel by other modes of transportation (including cruises, trains, and buses) will increase 1.4 percent, to 3.27 million travelers.

AAA expects to rescue more than 338,000 motorists across America this Independence Day weekend, with the primary reasons being lockouts, flat tires and battery-related issues.
