호주 시드니에서 남반구 최초의 위안부 소녀상 제막식을 앞두고 일본 우익단체가 물리적 폭력 가능성을 드러내며 방해공작을 노골화해 충격(衝擊)을 주고 있다.
특히 시드니 당국이 일본계 단체의 협박을 빌미로 오는 8월 6일 예정된 야외 제막식(除幕式) 불허방침을 통보해 한인사회가 강력 반발하고 있다.
시드니소녀상추진위원회(시소추)는 25일 긴급 이메일을 통해 “일본계 단체가 캔터베리 시의회(Canterbury Bankstown Council)에 ‘모든 수단을 동원해 제막식을 막겠다. 폭력사태가 날 수도 있다’는 이메일과 편지를 수백통 보내왔다”며 이에 놀란 시당국이 제막식 행사 불허를 통보해 왔다고 전했다.
이들 단체는 매일 아침 “소녀상이 일본인을 혐오하게 하고, 증오하며 모욕을 주고 있다. 소녀상을 건립하면 이를 지원하는 호주 연합교단(Uniting Church)의 빌 크루즈 목사(Bill Crews)를 반인종 차별법(National Anti-Racism Strategy)으로 소송하겠다”고 협박을 하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다,
시소추는 일본계 단체의 협박을 규탄하는 한편, 시당국이 이러한 압력에 굴복해 행사를 불과 열흘 앞두고 불허 결정을 내리는 것은 부당하다며 동포사회에서 힘을 보태달라고 당부했다.
시소추의 박은덕 강병조 대표는 이날 시당국 관계자와 긴급 미팅을 갖고 “야외 제막행사와 관련해 이미 한달여전(6월 21일) 카운슬에 알렸는데 아무 연락이 없다가 행사 10일 전에 일방적인 통보를 하는 것을 결코 받아들일 수 없다”는 입장을 전다했다.
시소추 대표단은 “시당국에 우리가 경비 인력을 고용하고 경찰에 행사 보호요청을 하겠다는 제안을 했다”면서 “일단 재논의해보겠다는 답변을 들었지만 제막식을 거행해야 한다는 강력한 여론이 전해지지 않으면 번복될 가능성이 적다”고 긴급 상황임을 알렸다.
이에 시소추는 동포들이 캔터베리 카운슬에 전화와 이메일을 통해 “평화의 소녀상이 일본인을 모욕하는 것이 아니라 전쟁을 반대하고 국가가 전시에 폭력적으로 여성들을 끌고가서 성노예로 만드는 끔찍한 역사가 되풀이되지 않아야 한다는 인권과 평화의 메시지를 전달하는 것이라는 사실을 강조해달라“고 당부했다.
시소추는 “소녀상 제막식은 시드니에서 평화와 인권을 옹호하는 일본인 커뮤니티도 환영한다는 입장을 밝힌 바 있다. 또한 행사를 애타게 기다리는 많은 한인들과 타민족 멤버들의 정서는 고려하지 않고 극우 일본단체의 입장만 생각하냐고 따져봤지만 완강히 불가 입장을 고수하고 있다”고 말했다.
시소추의 정영란 사무장은 “소녀상 평화비 제막식을 앞두고 시드니 일본 단체의 방해가 거의 발악 수준으로 치닫고 있다. 시의회에 그들의 부당함을 이성적으로 따져 물어달라” 한인동포들이 지금 당장 전화와 이메일(샘플 참조)로 항의해줄 것을 거듭 당부했다.

I refer to the above matter and note that Korean Community in Sydney is planning to hold ‘Unveiling of Peace Statue” (the “Ceremony”) on 6 August 2016.
I also note that the planned gathering on 6 August 2016 had been in the pipeline for a long time and the Council was notified of the detailed plans for the ceremony on 21 June 2016.
It is with a great concern and incredulity to learn that the Council is considering to oppose the planned gathering on the basis of ‘security issue’ as the Ceremony is to unveil the Peace Statue upholding human rights and in promotion of peace and harmony.
I understand that you have been subject to dissemination of unsubstantiated allegations in respect of the Ceremony and its aim and the Ceremony, I repeat is for promoting peace and harmony and has in no way been organized to condemn people of Japan.
I strongly urge you to allow the Ceremony to go ahead and should you wish to discuss further on any matters relating to the Ceremony, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many stories have been told about the horrors, brutalities, suffering and starvation of Dutch women in Japanese prison camps. But one story was never told, the most shameful story of the worst human rights abuse committed by the Japanese during World War II: The story of the “Comfort Women”, the jugun ianfu, and how these women were forcibly seized against their will, to provide sexual services for the Japanese Imperial Army... ...I have forgiven the Japanese for what they did to me, but I can never forget. For fifty years, the “Comfort Women” maintained silence; they lived with a terrible shame, of feeling soiled and dirty. It has taken 50 years for these women’s ruined lives to become a human rights issue. I hope that by speaking out, I have been able to make a contribution to world peace and reconciliation, and that human rights violation against women will never happen again.
