Hyunsoo Kim Selected as the 2024 AHL-Kim Family Fund Senior Research Fellowship

Conducting Research on the AHL Foundation¡¯s Archive of Korean Artists in America Collection and Digital Archive

AHL Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting Korean artists, has selected Dr. Hyunsoo Kim as the recipient of the 2024 AHL-Kim Family Fund Senior Research Fellowship. The Senior Research Fellowship provides funding of $5,000 to conduct in-depth research on the Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA). Established in 2020 with the support of Korean-American artists, the fellowship has been funded since 2021 by the Kim Family Fund, founded by renowned artists Tchah Sup Kim and Myong Hi Kim. The selected Senior Fellow will collect materials related to Korean contemporary artists active in the U.S. and conduct research to further expand the AKAA collection and digital archive.

Dr. Hyunsoo Kim, the selected 2024 Senior Fellow, is an artist, researcher, and educator based in both Seoul and New York. Her unique interdisciplinary research and artwork have been featured in numerous international exhibitions and conferences across the United States, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Germany, and France. She has received multiple awards, including the Myers Art Prize, the HGA Research Scholarship, a grant from the Ministry of Education (SK), and the 2023-2024 AHL Foundation Research Fellowship. Dr. Kim holds a Bachelor¡¯s degree in Textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design, a Master¡¯s degree in Textile Design from Philadelphia University, and a Doctorate in Education from Columbia University.

The Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA), launched in 2013, is a key initiative of the AHL Foundation that aims to document and preserve materials related to Korean-American artists. The AKAA serves as a platform for preserving Korean cultural heritage and facilitating academic exchanges among art historians. It also offers public access to these materials through its online archive (https://www.ahlfoundation-akaa.org/). Following her work as the AHL-Grace Charity Foundation Research Fellow last year, Dr. Kim will continue her contributions to the archive this year as the Senior Research Fellow.
