국내 언론에서 점점 사라져가는 세월호 보도가 외신에서는 끊임없이 이어지고 있다.
세계 최대의 뉴스채널 CNN이 세월호 참사 실종자 가족의 슬픔을 보도했다. CNN은 15일 ‘세월호참사 고통의 6개월’이라는 제목으로 지난 6개월 간 진도항에서 가족을 찾기 위해 기다려온 실종자 가족들의 처절한 고통을 3분45초간 전했다.
CNN은 “한국 여객선 침몰사고의 잊혀진 가족들은 지난 6개월 동안 그래왔듯이 기다리고 있고 이들의 자녀 혹은 친지는 여전히 서해안의 바다 속에서 실종된 상태”라면서 “결코 일어나서는 안될 이 사고가 온 국가를 비탄(悲嘆)에 잠기게 했다”고 운을 떼었다.
16세 딸을 잃은 박은미씨 부부는 악몽속에 살고 있지만 “아이를 찾을 때 까지는 이곳을 떠날 수 없다. 이곳에서 죽는다 해도 아이를 찾을 때까지 여기 있어야 한다”며 딸을 찾지 못할 수도 있다는 사실을 받아들이지 않는다고 안타까워했다.
CNN은 “실종자 인양은 지난 7월 이후로 한 구도 없었지만 수색은 계속되며 겨울이 빠르게 오고 있다”면서 “사랑하는 가족을 찾기 전까지는 떠나기를 거부하는 이들의 삶은 지난 6개월 간 정지된 상태다. 한국의 정치 제도도 이점에서는 마찬가지”라고 지적했다.
CNN은 언젠가는 수색을 중단하고 배를 인양(引揚)할 것을 결정하는 시점이 언제가 될 것인가라는 질문을 해야 할 것이라면서도 진상규명과 관련, “정치인들과 가족들은 이 조사가 어떤 형태이고 누가 이를 시행할지를 두고 아직도 논쟁을 벌이고 있으며 실종자 가족들은 자식을 잃은 사실이 정치화되는 것에 진저리를 친다”고 전했다.
이어 “참사 직후 일부 희생자들이 떠내려갔을지도 모른다는 두려움이 있지만 이는 관계자들도 언급하기 대단히 민감한 문제”라면서 “현재 시점에서는 그런 일이 있었을 수도 있다는 염려가 있다. 가족들에게는 가슴이 찢어지는 일”이라고 보도를 맺었다.
CNN의 방송 스크립트 전문을 제공한 외신전문사이트 뉴스프로는 “아직 끝나지 않은 세월호의 비극을 세계적인 언론매체인 CNN은 비중있게 보도하고 있지만 국내 언론은 점점 외면하고 있다는 현실이 착잡하다”고 지적했다.

April 16th the passenger ferry sank off the south coast, killing more than 300 people, the majority of them school children on a field trip. Overloading of cargo, much of which wasn’t tied down properly contributed to the sinking according to officials. An accident that should never have happened devastated a nation.
지난 4월 16일, 여객선이 남해에서 침몰하며 대부분이 수학여행을 가던 학생들이었던 300명 이상이 사망했습니다. 관계자들에 따르면 대부분 제대로 고정시키지 않은 채 실은 과적 화물이 침몰의 원인이었습니다. 결코 일어나서는 안될 이 사고는 온국가를 비탄에 잠기게 했습니다.
Park Eun-Mi is still living that nightmare with her husband. Looking at photos of their sixteen year old daughter Da-Yeon, they refuse to accept she may never be found.
“We need to find our child” she says. “We can’t leave until my child is found. Even if we die here we need to stay until we find her.”
박은미씨는 남편과 함께 여전히 이 악몽 속에 살고 있습니다. 16세의 딸 은미양의 사진을 보며 이들은 딸을 결국 찾지 못할지도 모른다는 사실을 받아들이지 않습니다. “아이를 찾아야 한다”고 그녀는 말합니다. “아이를 찾을 때 까지는 이곳을 떠날 수 없다. 이곳에서 죽는다 해도 아이를 찾을 때까지 여기 있어야 한다.”
Body after body was brought ashore in the weeks after the disaster but no one has been found since July. The search continues. Winter is fast approaching. Jindo Port where the search operation has been based has become a memorial to those who lost their lives. People come to pay their respects; each yellow ribbon is a prayer or a message of support. Two of the families are still living here at the port. They are refusing to leave until their loved one has been found. Their lives have been at a standstill for the past six months; the same can be said for this country’s political system.

A protest tent has been set up by some families in the heart of Seoul calling for the truth but an investigation into what went wrong has not even started – politicians and families still arguing over what it should look like and who will lead it. Parliament has been crippled for months, thousands of draft bills sit unread.
서울 중심부에 일부 가족들이 진실을 요구하며 시위 천막을 세웠지만 무엇이 잘못되었는지에 대한 조사는 시작도 되지 않았습니다. 정치인들과 가족들은 이 조사가 어떤 형태이고 누가 이를 주도할지를 두고 아직도 논쟁을 벌이고 있습니다. 국회는 몇 달 동안 마비되었고 수천개의 법안은 읽지도 않은 채 방치되어 있습니다.
And back in Jindo ten families waiting for their loved ones to be found are sickened that their loss has turned political. “I feel embarrassed to be living in a country like this” says Park, “my husband is saying we should move out of the country when they find our daughter. We can’t trust this country anymore.” They are not the only grieving family to feel this way.
그리고 진도에서 사랑하는 가족이 발견되기를 기다리는 열 가족은 자신들이 가족을 잃은 것이 정치화되는 것에 진저리를 칩니다. “이런 나라에 살고 있는 것이 부끄럽다”고 박 씨가 말합니다. “내 남편은 딸만 찾으면 이 나라를 떠야한다고 말한다. 이 나라를 더 이상 믿을 수가 없다.” 비탄에 잠긴 가족들 중 이들만 그렇게 느끼는 것은 아닙니다.
So, six months on there’s still no sign of these ten victims and the question hasn’t been publicly asked at this point but with winter fast approaching it will at some point: when does the search stop and the decision be made to actually raise the ship.
그래서 6개월이 지나도록 아직 이 10명의 희생자에 대한 아무런 흔적도 없고 이 시점에서 공개적으로 이 질문이 제기된 바 없지만, 겨울이 급속히 다가오기 때문에 언젠가는 이 질문을 해야할 것입니다: 수색을 중단하고 실제로 배를 인양할 것을 결정하는 시점이 언제가 될 것인가.
Has the ship itself been exhaustively and completely searched? Is there any guess about where these remains could be?
배 자체는 철저하게 그리고 완전히 수색되었습니까? 이 시신들이 어디에 있을지에 관해 추측되는 곳이 있습니까?
The ship has been searched. It’s been searched extensively and of course that’s where the majority of the victims were found. But there have been a couple of bodies that have been found many miles, many kilometers away from the ship itself. So of course the fear is that in the hours or maybe even the days just after this disaster some victims may have been lost, and of course this is something that does concern the families. The family that I spoke to, though, refused to entertain the thought that they may never find their daughter. And of course it’s a very sensitive issue for officials to talk about as well. It was just a few days after this disaster happened when a cordon was put around the ship or at least in certain areas where the current was strong to try and make sure no one was lost, but of course at this point there is a concern that that may have been the case.”
배는 수색됐습니다. 대대적으로 수색됐고 물론 그곳에서 희생자의 대다수가 발견됐습니다. 하지만 배에서 몇 킬로미터, 혹은 몇 마일 떨어진 곳에서 발견된 시신이 두 구 있었습니다. 그래서 물론 이 참사 직후 처음 몇 시간 혹은 아마 처음 며칠 동안에 일부 희생자들이 떠내려갔을지도 모른다는 두려움이 있고, 물론 이것은 가족들이 걱정하는 일입니다. 하지만 제가 대화를 나눈 가족은 딸을 발견할 수 없을지도 모른다는 생각을 해보려하지도 않았습니다. 그리고 물론 그것은 관계자들로서도 언급하기 대단히 민감한 문제입니다. 참사가 일어난 후 며칠되지 않아 시신이 떠내려가지 않도록 배 주변에 혹은 최소한 물살이 강한 부분에 비상선이 쳐졌지만 물론 현재 시점에서는 아마 그런 일이 있었을 수도 있다는 염려가 있습니다.
