Dear Friend—a quick update on President Moon¡¯s visit to the United States!
I kindly share my own humble contribution to this historic and epic journey for peace in the Korean peninsula, Northeast Asia and the world: my interview with a Washington-based progressive radio program, "Loud and Clear with Brian Becker" (see #5). Please help us!
1. Brother Marinus. Military mission of mercy that saved 14,000 souls
On the morning of Christmas Day, all the refugees were shuttled ashore by two US navy tank-landing craft. No one was killed or even badly hurt; and the total put ashore exceeded the number loaded at Hungnam by five healthy babies born during the epic voyage. "God's own hand was at the helm of my little ship," LaRue recalled. The deeply religious, Philadephia-born seaman commanded the Meredith Victory until she was taken out of service in 1952. The US Congress designated her a "gallant ship" and LaRue was awarded American and South Korean honours. The mission of mercy, which brought forth the US Maritime Administration's "greatest-ever" plaudit, reinforced LaRue's long-standing vocation, and he joined the Benedictine order in 1954. He died at St Paul's Abbey in Newton, New Jersey, leaving no close relatives. 2) U.S. Marine Corps Facebook
Today, President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea will recognize Marines of the Korean War with a wreath-laying at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. President Moon¡¯s parents were able to flee to safety after the 1st Marine Division drove the enemy back, allowing the Hungnam Evacuation of 1950. Three years later, the future president was born.

¡°S.S. Merdith Victory¡¯s voyage towards and freedom and human rights that began sixty seven years ago must continue on. I will wholeheartedly join in this journey. I saw an interview of Mr. Robert Luny who was a sailor on the Victory¡¦. He would like to see a reunified Korea before passing away¡¦I felt intense emotion deep inside. This is my dream as well.¡±
¡°In spite of total devastation from the Korean War, South Korea achieved economic development and democratization¡¦ If President Trump helps with peace-building efforts in the Korean peninsula, he will leave the kind of legacy that none of his predecessors had and will become a great president." https://www.facebook.com/marines/videos/10154435204675194/
KEI. The Son of a Refugee who Became President of the Republic of Korea Visits D.C.
The son of a refugee from Hungnam could become the President of the Republic of Korea and join you all today. I hope this fact helps make the Korean War veterans of the U.N. Forces feel a sense of delight and reward.

3) 6 prominent former US government officials sent letter to Mr. Trump urging him to begin talks with North Korea
¡°To show good faith and jump-start talks, the United States should send a high level presidential envoy to North Korea¡¦. The initial goal of talks should be to reduce tensions and cap on North Korea¡¯s arsenal.¡±

4) More than 120,000 Americans signed the petition calling for diplomacy with North Korea
Today, Win Without War, CREDO and nearly a dozen national partner organizations delivered a petition to South Korean President Moon Jae-in signed by more than 100,000 Americans offering strong support for President Moon¡¯s commitment to diplomacy with North Korea.http://winwithoutwar.org/donald-trump-wants-war-with-north-korea-tell-president-moon-we-support-diplomacy/
¡°Americans and South Koreans are now even more united by our calls for a diplomatic solution to the unresolved Korean conflict,¡± said Christine Ahn, international coordinator of Women Cross DMZ. ¡°In a May 2017 Economist/YouGov poll, 60 percent of Americans supported direct negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang, and in another major poll just released, 80 percent of South Koreans said they want inter-Korean dialogue with North Koreans. Sixty-four years of conflict is enough. The American and Korean people want peace.¡±
¡°As a veteran who served in the Korean War, I am very pleased that over 100,000 Americans signed this important petition, which echoes the letter I sent with over 60 Members of Congress to President Trump calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. This outpouring of support for diplomacy sends a powerful signal that the American people want a peaceful solution to the conflict on the Korean peninsula.¡± John Conyers, Member of U.S. Congress
5) Loud and Clear with Brian Becker, Moon and Trump Meet: Will It Be Dialogue or Confrontation on the Korean Peninsula?
South Korea¡¯s new President Moon Jae-in comes face to face with Donald Trump today at the White House. Moon has expressed optimism about talks on resolving the DPRK nuclear issue and skepticism about THAAD, but will he really be able to turn the tide in Korea away from confrontation and towards dialogue? Simone Chun, a professor and a fellow at the Korea Policy Institute and a member of the Korean Peace Network, joins the show.
Key points: What mainstream media does not report
1) President Moon Jae-in¡¯s unwavering support for inter-Korean engagement via diplomatic approach
Step-by-step approach
Resume immediately north and south cooperation
Support engagement
Peace treaty: long-term goal
Mainstream media does not pay enough attention to Moon's peace initiative
President Moon with more than 80% approval rating from Koreans has legitimacy and momentum for engagement with North Korea
More than 100,000 Americans signed petition calling for diplomacy to Mr. Trump
Do not just focus on what Mr. Trump says but pay attention to efforts of peace activists, citizen diplomats both in South Korea and the United States
2) Importance of timing
The best opportunity we ever have for successful diplomacy in the Korean peninsula
In the past, engagement started in the last years of Korean and American administrations
This time any diplomatic breakthrough in the beginning of Moon who has huge mandate and support for diplomacy and Trump administration has 5 or 8 years to play out
Strong public support and growing consensus for diplomacy
Amazing opportunity
High level of former diplomats sent letters to Trump
According to former defense secretary, Williams Perry, the only thing that works is direct talks between U.S. and North Korea
3) Unprecedented nature of division of Korean that had been one nation for thousands of years until June 25, 1950
Korea president Moon Jae-in himself is part of separated families from the war
Pain and sorrow of human tragedy of unending Korean War
Childhood Immunization and North Korean Refugees in China
Chung, Han, Kim, and Finkelstein, without substantiation, cite an estimate of possibly 10,000 to 50,000 such stateless children born each year. https://piie.com/blogs/north-korea-witness-transformation/childhood-immunization-and-north-korean-refugees-china
The answer to this unspeakable human cost of this horrible war is peace treaty!
End the pain and sorrow of human tragedy by ending the 67-year-old Korean War
Peace in the Korean peninsula for Northeast Asia and the rest of world!
