The April 27 Declaration of the two Koreas was a historic event, which promises a bright future for the people of Korea. It calls for the two Koreas to settle their problems “on their own accord” and lays out a careful schedule to proceed, something quite new. It also calls on the international community (meaning Washington) to support this process. Unfortunately, the signals from Washington are at best mixed. National Security Council advisor John Bolton, who has called for bombing North Korea at once, and Vice-President Mike Pence both invoked the “Libya model,” knowing full well its import. President Trump cancelled the Singapore summit a few hours after North Korea had destroyed its main testing site as an important gesture of conciliation. But these are pitfalls, not termination of the process. With determination and goodwill the two Koreas can move forward with the plans outlined in the Declaration. It is the task of the people of the United States to support them in this historic endeavor and to ensure that their own government does not undermine or in any way impede the process. That can succeed. It must succeed, for the welfare of Korea, and all of us.

4월 27일 남한과 북한의 판문점 선언은 역사적인 사건이며 남과 북 국민들의 밝은 미래를 약속한다. 이 선언은 남한과 북한이 자신들의 문제를 자율적으로 해결할 것을 요구하고, 앞으로 진행될 아주 새로운 일에 대한 신중한 계획을 제시한다. 이 선언은 또한 미국으로 대변되는 국제사회가 선언의 실행 과정을 지지할 것을 요청한다. 불행하게도 미국으로부터의 신호는 아무리 낙관적으로 봐도 혼재되어 있다.
당장 북한을 폭격할 것을 요구해온 국가안보 보좌관 존 볼턴과 부통령 마이크 펜스는 "리비아 모델"을 언급했는데, 그들은 그것이 의미하는 바를 대단히 잘 알고 있다. 트럼프 대통령은 북한이 화해의 중요한 제스처로 자신들의 주요 핵실험장을 폐쇄하고 나서 몇 시간 후 싱가포르 정상회담을 취소했다. 이것은 회담 과정의 종료는 아니더라도 위험한 일이다. 남한과 북한은 결단력과 선의를 가지고 선언문에 명시된 계획들을 진전시킬 수 있다. 이 역사적인 노력을 하는 남한과 북한 국민을 지지해 주고 남북한 정부가 선언의 실행 과정을 어떤 방식으로든 약화시키거나 정체시키지 않도록 보장하는 것이 미국민들의 과제이다. 이것은 성공할 수 있다. 한반도와 우리 모두의 안녕을 위해 반드시 성공해야만 한다.

2. Chain Movement along DMZ. Peace Action Maine
A movement to form a “human chain” along the DMZ is gaining ground all over South Korea. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Mar. 1 Movement and the first year anniversary of the Panmunjom Declaration, movement organizers are calling for people to hold hands in a line stretching along the DMZ, stretching from Ganghwa County, Incheon to Goseong, Gangwon County. The distance would be covered by around 500,000 people standing about a meter apart from each other.

"500,000 people is not a small number, but we'll be able to collect them as we've prepared for this event for a long time," the official said.
The event also aims to mark the centennial of the March 1 Independence Movement, a nationwide march staged in 1919 to call for Korea's liberation from the brutal Japanese colonial rule. Korea regained its independence at the end of World War II in 1945. (Yonhap)
