How can I say there is no hope when I see the glorious sunrising from the darkness? How can I say that life is hard to live with the warmth of warm people like the sun? Could I say that it would be difficult and hard to make this journey while I got compassion basically and even kindness additionally.

The first campsite was unfortunately chosen beside the train tracks. All the goods arriving at the L.A. port across the Pacific are going east and south to satisfy Americans' huge spending needs through this railway only. Even I, the much tired traveler, couldn't endure the long train which took at least 10 minutes to pass by and kept shaking the ground every 10 minutes. After 12 o'clock, I gave up sleeping and packed luggages again. The 70-kilogram baggage is essential for srvival for four months , so I shouldn't lose any of it, and once they're out of place, I've been searching for it for a long time. It took me a while to hang up the tent and pack again. The night air at 2 a.m. was cold but much fresher and better than running in midday hot weather.

The dawn breaks out across the San Antonio Mountains with the sound of the crowing roosters. The smell of chicken poop vibrates. There must be a chicken farm nearby. In California, oranges were scattered almost over the ground. I picked up some oranges that fell on the ground, ate one and stocked it up as emergency food.

I didn't usually enjoy eating oranges, but when I took a bite of it, the orange juice pops out in my mouth, and the sweet, fresh, cool taste goes through my throat. The thirst is soon quenched. Now the steep route over the sand mountain has begun. The smell of horse shit vibrates as I passes through a horse ranch on the middle of the mountain. The smell of cow dung vibrates again as I pass the cattle ranch. Where people live in groups, the smell of human excrement vibrates. We can't avoid this kind of smell if we live in groups everywhere.

Traveling is a kind of the deviant action to smell the scent of nature avoiding the stuffiness of being trapped in a chicken coop and the smell of human excrement that comes inevitably from living in such a group. Paradoxically, I started off this journey with a strong scent of human. I cannot forget Choi Sung-kwon who helped the LA schedule from the beginning, Peter Kim of the marathon club L.A here, Park Sang-cheon who was proud of me and delighted as if he were doing his job together, and Helen Park and Dr. Park who invited me home ror dinner. I smelled very unforgettable fragrance from them. Of course, the order of my fellows, relatives and Kwon Hye-soon still tickles my nose. They ran together with me in New York City and extended many considerations and concerns even before leaving.

I wake up in the very early dawn and run. But whenever I take a break, I take off my sneakers and my socks and dry my feet and my socks. It is very difficult to keep clean on such a poor trip, but I try my best to keep clean. When I take off my hat, my hair is tangled like seaweed with sweat, and my face and forearms are as salty as salt. I wiped them well with a wet tissue. When I saw a beautiful park while running, I went in, spread a yoga mat under them, and took a sound nap for a while.

It was already dark when I arrived at San Bernardino, a mining city and famous for orange cultivation. As the route shown on the map was a highway, I couldn't even get in, and even though I searched the route at Google Maps and Navigation, I kept wandering around because they showed me a dead end. Then a woman came up to me and said, "I saw you a while ago too, and do you really walk to New York?" "No! I'm not walking, I'm running." I used to correct people when they asked me if I was walking. She said to me again, "When you get to New York, do you fly back to LA? Or do you come back on foot?" "I'm not walking. I'm running. I live in New York City. When I came to LA, I just got off my one-way ticket and flew in." I corrected her by saying I was running, not walking. She shrugged and said good luck to me.

When I broke up with her A little bit more after I broke up with her , a man stood in front of the house and called me and asked me to take a picture with me calling me as a really nice young man.

I am pleased to call me so. Yes, I am a young man only at 59. Having had conversations with him and couldn't find the place for tenting until late, I asked him if I could put up a tent in his yard, and he gladly accepted my suggestion. When I entered the yard and try to set up the tent, he came out again and told me to use his drawing-room, even if it is inconvenient, because there is no vacanct room, but it would be better than sleeping in the yard. He called himself "Richard" and asked him me to just call him "Kang", my second name, because it was difficult to pronouncel "MyongKu", my first name. But he pronounced my first name "MyongKu" correctly. "MyongKu! Are you going to eat the food you have for dinner? Or should we prepare dinner for you?" he asked me so clearly. Taking a shower after a few days, I feel refreshed. I baked a piece of steak I had just bought from the market, washed the rice and put it on a stove in the kitchen .

Richard, his wife and his daughter Renee sat around the table and listened to me. He said, "Kang, why are you running such a tough trans-American marathon?" He must have forgotten my first name after calling me "MyongKu" at first. He's calling me Kang, my family name. "Dreaming of running through a vast American continent, and one day I was suddenly attracted to something that I couldn't stand, so I set out running like this. And I would like to share with American citizens the belief that the world will be more peaceful once the two Koreas are unified," I said to them, explaining further why Korea should be unified. My grandmother left behind a daughter who had married in the North, and came to the South, holding hands of her five young sons at night seventy years ago and she was not able to step on the North until she passed away, I told them. I told them further that my grandmother prayed to all the able religious spirits on the Korean Peninsular for she has so many things to pray for. I took my grandmother's hand and went to churches, cathedrals, and temples. Little I grew up watching my grandmother pray toward the northern sky over a bowl of clean water at dawn, and even watching her visit even to Nammyohoren Senkyo, a Japanese-style religion. I told the story that started with my family history and he talked about his son who died two years ago of drug overdose. "I woke up one morning and opened the door and found him cold with a needle stuck in his room! Drug abuse. That was the year before last. He's always been a good kid. He didn't seem to have any problems." "I woke up one morning and found him cold with a needle stuck in his door! Drug abuse. That was the year before. My son has always been a good boy. He usually seemed fine." There were tears in his eyes when he said this. When I turned around, I saw tears in his wife's eyes and in Renee's eyes, too. Tears were so contagious that they soon formed tears around my eyes, too.

I told him that I would be the first Asian soloist to complete the race if I completed it , though I didn't really go out in determination to complete the race. Then he encouraged me saying that I was strong enough to complete the race. I really felt like I was getting stronger when I heard that. A word can make a person strong and fall into the abyss. I really didn't have the confidence to finish the race. It's just that what I do now is my first time doing and I know that every day's steps will be the longest distance I've ever run. I know I'm not stronger than anyone else. But I just wanted to make sure to myself that I wasn't weak when I decided to go on this trip.

Thinking that to challenge healthily looks smart and great because of his son¡¯s sudden death, he said that he had talked to young people like me. So if there's anything he could do to help, he¡¯d like to help me even with a little thing., he said. But he was three years younger than me. I usually exercise hard and take care of myself well, so it may seem that I look young. Mr. Richards and his family gave the stranger the greatest warmth he might have.

The scent of human beings whom I meet as I leave a long way already makes my way home fast. A good world is a society in which the human fragrance vibrates.
